With the introduction of the direct operator billing system, more consumers have been able to
pay online. This is because this infrastructure is not related to banks at all.
Instead it is linked to telecommunication companies. Thus, they just have to
use SMS+ and Internet+, two payment methods offered by Digital Global Pass, to
shop online.
How was direct operator billing created? Years back, people
who did not have a bank account could not process transaction on the Web. They
were not equipped with the necessary resources to validate a payment on the
Internet. This meant that they could not enjoy the same facilities as others
which signified financial exclusion. The situation was pretty unfair and for
the economy to progress, it is important that everyone has access to the same
financial services.
To introduce a solution to this problem, telecommunication companies decided to
collaborate with fintech firms. Both companies worked with content developers
to create the direct operator billing infrastructure. Thus, those using SMS+
and Internet+ do not need a bank account to process micropayments. They just
need a mobile account. This is because their network service provider is going
to validate the settlement and add charges to their phone bill at the
end of the month.
