Online payment: what are the options for unbanked clients?

Nowadays, online payment services can be used by everyone. What used to be restricted to a portion of the population ten years back can now be accessed by the majority. Indeed, at the time, digital settlement solutions could be utilised only by those having a credit or debit card. This is because these solutions were offered by, or linked to, banks. This was a problem for consumers who did not have a bank account since they could not enjoy the same facilities as others.

With new technologies, this issue is no longer relevant. Indeed, with the introduction of the direct operator billing infrastructure, even unbanked and underbanked customers can pay online. For instance, if they wish to purchase multimedia products, they can choose between SMS+ and Internet+. To use these services, they just need a mobile account and a device which is connected to the Internet. The first one is a mobile payment method. This means that they have to be equipped with their smartphone. The settlement will be completed via text messages. The other solution will redirect shoppers to their network service provider’s website. In both cases, their mobile carrier is going to process the transaction and add the charges to their phone bill at the end of the month.

Payments are charged to mobile accounts
